Al-Mg alloy (5000): the best metal material for manufacturing Marine equipment

it can be seen that Al-Mg alloy, namely 5XXX (5000) series aluminum alloy, is the best metal material for manufacturing Marine equipment, because they not only have the highest corrosion resistance in Marine environment, but also the lowest density of aluminum alloy materials, which is very beneficial for reducing the quality of products such as "Geng Hai No.1" Marine pasture complex platform. Because of the AI-Mg system's high corrosion resistance, aluminum platforms do not require maintenance throughout their life cycle (30 years), whereas steel platforms require maintenance every three to five years, otherwise they will rust.


A sea ranch is a platform for farmed Marine life that floats on the surface of the water offshore. The main platform of the second phase of the China-built ocean ranch "Geng Hai No. 1" project was launched in Yantai, Shandong Province, on April 10, and the tilting test has been completed. "Geng Hai No.1" Marine ranch complex platform is located in the sea area east of Fisherman's Wharf, Yantai City, Shandong Province. It integrates fishery farming, Marine tourism, scientific and technological research and development and other functions to improve the efficiency of fishery farming with scientific and technological innovation, and realize the transformation and upgrading of Marine fisheries. According to the introduction, "Geng Hai 1" advanced design, equipped with automatic feeding, environmental monitoring, ship collision prevention and other systems, unmanned ship, underwater inspection robot and other technical equipment, can realize the whole process of intelligent control of production.

We believe that, in the construction of Marine ranch metal materials, superstructure and internal structure of more than 75% aluminum, because aluminum density is small, can greatly reduce the quality of the structure itself, and aluminum has a strong corrosion resistance to seawater and Marine atmosphere, it can be said that the Marine ranch should be all aluminum. The so-called all-aluminum, not to say that all structural parts are made of aluminum or aluminum alloy, but in meet the technical performance requirements and ensure safety and environmental protection, all available aluminum or aluminum alloy manufacturing workpiece should be aluminum or aluminum alloy.

The corrosion of aluminum alloy is more serious than that of pure aluminum, but there are a few exceptions. The corrosion resistance of aluminum and aluminum alloy in air, acid and water is arranged in descending order as follows: Al, AI-Mn alloy, Al-Mg alloy, Al-Mg-Si alloy, Al-Si alloy, Al-Zn-Mg alloy, Al-Zn-Mg-Cu alloy, Al-Cu-Mg alloy, Al-Cu alloy. The descending order in alkaline solution and seawater is: Al-Mg alloy, Al, Al-Mn alloy, al-Mg-Si alloy, al-Zn-Mg alloy, al-Si alloy, Al-Zn-Cu-Mg alloy, Al-Cu-Mg alloy, AI-Cu alloy. It should be noted that the above sequence of corrosion resistance is only true when the alloys that are sensitive to spalling, intergranular or stress corrosion cracking have been heat treated to remove these sensitivities. At the same time, the above arrangement is only a general order, under special circumstances, there may be some changes. The corrosion resistance of aluminum coated materials is only slightly worse than that of aluminum coated layers. For example, the corrosion resistance of AI-Cu alloy coated with pure aluminum is equal to or even better than that of AI-Mn alloy.

Of the 105 commonly used AI-Mg alloys registered by the Aluminum Institute of America (AA), I recommend 5182, 5454, 5083, 5086, and 5052 alloys as they have the best overall properties. The aluminum alloy needed to make this kind of Marine equipment can be mass-produced in China at present, and the quality is superior and the price is reasonable.
